Building Embellishment Clusters

A cluster is a purposeful grouping of embellishments — die cuts, stickers, enamel dots, flowers, chipboard, and other elements — arranged together to create a visual focal point on your layout. Think of it as a mini still life on your scrapbook page. The best clusters mix textures (flat stickers + raised chipboard + dimensional flowers), sizes (one large element anchoring several smaller ones), and shapes (round enamel dots + linear washi tape + organic floral shapes).

The trick most beginners miss is that clusters need a "big, medium, small" rhythm. Start with one large element (a big die cut or title), add 2-3 medium elements around it (smaller die cuts, chipboard pieces), then fill in with tiny accents (enamel dots, sequins, small stickers). It's the same principle florists use when arranging bouquets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many embellishments should be in a cluster?

A typical cluster has 5-10 pieces of varying sizes and types. The rule of odds applies — odd numbers (3, 5, 7) tend to look more natural than even groupings. But don't overthink it. Start placing elements and stop when it feels balanced.

Where should I place a cluster on my layout?

Clusters work best near your title, in a corner, or alongside a photo edge. They're visual anchors that guide the eye. Most layouts have one main cluster and sometimes a smaller secondary one on the opposite side for balance.

How do I keep a cluster from looking like a random pile of stuff?

Three rules: vary your heights (flat, foam-mounted, and thick elements together), overlap your pieces (nothing should float in isolation), and maintain a color thread (at least 2-3 pieces should share a color). Anchor everything to one large central element.
