Adding Color to Your Layouts
Color techniques go beyond choosing the right patterned paper. Watercolor washes, ink blending, paint splatters, and custom color sprays let you create backgrounds and effects that are completely unique to your page. Two scrapbookers using the same technique won't get the same result — that's what makes color work so satisfying.
Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays are a staple in many Hip Kits, and they produce gorgeous shimmery color effects on both light and dark cardstock. Our design team also uses Distress Inks for blending backgrounds, acrylic paint for bold statements, and watercolors for soft, dreamy washes.
If you're nervous about adding color directly to a layout, start on scrap paper first. Or create your colored background on a separate piece of cardstock and use it as a panel — that way you can redo it without wasting your base page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the easiest color technique for beginners?
Ink splatter. Dilute acrylic paint with water, dip an old toothbrush in it, and flick the bristles over your page. It creates a beautiful organic texture that's literally impossible to mess up. Start with one or two colors that match your kit.
How do I blend Distress Inks smoothly?
Use a blending tool with a foam applicator. Apply ink in circular motions, starting from the edges and working inward. Layer light colors first, then darker colors. The key is light pressure and multiple passes rather than heavy application.
Can I use watercolor on regular cardstock?
You can, but watercolor paper or mixed media paper gives much better results. Regular cardstock buckles and pills with too much water. If using cardstock, apply very thin washes and let each dry before adding more.
