Stencil & Texture Paste

Creating Texture with Stencils

Stencils are one of the fastest ways to add pattern and dimension to a scrapbook layout. Place a stencil on your paper, spread texture paste over it with a palette knife, lift the stencil, and you have a raised design that catches light and adds a tactile element your page didn't have before. The whole process takes under 5 minutes.

You can also use stencils with ink sprays, distress inks, or acrylic paint for flat pattern effects. Spray through the stencil for a soft, blended look, or sponge ink through for more defined edges. Sophie Delorme's stencil tutorials are a great starting point — she shows how a single stencil can produce completely different effects depending on the medium you push through it.

Hip Kit Club occasionally includes stencils in monthly kits, and they pair perfectly with the included texture paste or sprays. The designs are exclusive to Hip Kit and coordinate with each month's theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between texture paste and modeling paste?

They're often used interchangeably. Texture paste is typically smoite and more flexible when dry. Modeling paste dries harder and more opaque. Both work through stencils for scrapbooking — the choice is mainly about the finish you prefer. Light texture paste is best if you want to stamp or write over it.

How long does texture paste take to dry?

About 30-60 minutes for a thin layer, longer for thick applications. You can speed it up with a heat tool held about 8 inches away — just don't get too close or the paste will bubble. Let it dry completely before adding other elements on top.

Can I color texture paste?

Absolutely. Mix a tiny amount of acrylic paint directly into the paste before applying. A little goes a long way — start with a drop and mix thoroughly. You can also paint or spray over dried texture paste for a different effect.
