What Is Mixed Media Scrapbooking?

Mixed media means combining traditional paper crafting with wet media — think gesso, acrylic paint, texture paste, ink sprays, and more. It's where scrapbooking meets art journaling, and it creates layouts with depth, texture, and visual interest that flat paper alone can't achieve.

The best part? You don't need to be an artist. Start with white gesso as a background primer, add some Lindy's Stamp Gang sprays for color, and you'll be amazed at what happens. Most of our design team members will tell you they stumbled into mixed media by accident and now can't imagine scrapping without it.

Anke Kramer and several of our design team members regularly demonstrate mixed media techniques using Hip Kit supplies — from simple ink-splatter backgrounds to full textured, layered masterpieces. The tutorials below walk you through everything from your first gesso layer to advanced modeling paste effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Won't wet media warp my scrapbook pages?

It can if you use too much water. Apply gesso and paint in thin layers and let each dry before adding more. Use heavier cardstock (80lb+) as your base, and press your finished page under heavy books overnight to flatten it. Many scrapbookers use a heat tool to speed drying between layers.

What mixed media supplies should a beginner start with?

White gesso, one or two color sprays (Lindy's Stamp Gang are our favorites), and basic acrylic paint. That's it. You can create beautiful backgrounds with just these three supplies. Add texture paste and stencils once you're comfortable.

Can I use mixed media techniques on pocket page layouts?

Absolutely! Apply techniques to individual pocket cards before inserting them. Just keep the media layer thin so cards still fit in the pockets without bulging.
