Adding Texture with Hand Stitching

Hand stitching adds warmth and tactile dimension that no printed embellishment can replicate. When someone runs their fingers across a stitched border or a hand-sewn starflake, they connect with your page in a way that flat elements simply can't achieve. It's one of those techniques that looks way harder than it actually is.

Hip Kit Club's exclusive stitchable dies make this even easier — they punch perfectly spaced holes so you just follow the dots with a needle and embroidery thread. Sophie Delorme is a master at combining stitching with die cuts, and Anke Kramer regularly incorporates cross-stitch patterns into her layouts. Their tutorials below break down every step.

You don't need fancy supplies — a basic embroidery needle, some floss or baker's twine, and a foam mat to poke holes on. Start with a simple running stitch border and work your way up to decorative patterns. Even "faux stitching" (drawing stitch marks with a pen) creates a charming handmade look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Won't stitching damage my scrapbook page?

Not if you work on a foam mat and use a fine needle. The holes are tiny and actually add to the handmade charm. For archival pages, use acid-free thread. Many scrapbookers stitch on a separate cardstock panel and then adhere the panel to their layout.

What thread should I use?

Embroidery floss (2-3 strands separated from a 6-strand skein) is the most popular. Baker's twine gives a rustic look. Some crafters use thin yarn or even waxed linen thread. Match your thread color to your layout's color palette.

What are stitchable dies?

These are metal dies that cut a shape with pre-spaced holes around the edge. You run the die through your machine, then stitch through the holes with a needle and thread. Hip Kit Club includes exclusive stitchable dies in select monthly kits — they take all the measuring guesswork out of hand stitching.
