A sketch is a simple line drawing that shows where to place your photos, title, journaling, and embellishments on a layout. It takes the guesswork out of design and gives you a starting point when you're staring at a blank page. Even experienced scrapbookers use sketches — they're not a crutch, they're a tool.

Do I have to follow the sketch exactly?
Not at all. Sketches are starting points, not rules. Flip them horizontally or vertically, change the number of photos, resize elements, swap embellishment types — the sketch is there to give you a foundation so you're not starting from scratch.
Where do I find scrapbook sketches?
Hip Kit Club provides an exclusive Allison Davis sketch with every monthly kit. You can also find free sketches on Pinterest, scrapbooking blogs, and in Facebook groups. PageMaps is another popular free source.
How do I adapt a sketch for a different number of photos?
If a sketch shows 3 photos and you only have 1, enlarge that single photo to fill the photo area. If you have more photos than the sketch shows, shrink them down or overlap them. The key proportions of the layout stay the same.
