Stamping & Heat Embossing Basics

Stamping is one of the most accessible entry points into scrapbooking beyond basic photo-and-paper layouts. A good stamp set and an ink pad let you add sentiments, patterns, borders, and decorative elements to any page in seconds. Hip Kit Club includes exclusive stamp sets in many monthly kits — designed to coordinate with that month's papers and dies.

Heat embossing takes stamping to the next level. You stamp with a special clear embossing ink, sprinkle embossing powder on top, then hit it with a heat gun. The powder melts into a raised, glossy finish that looks and feels incredible. Gold embossing on dark cardstock is a classic combination that never gets old.

Our design team members like Anke Kramer and Kirei Baldwin demonstrate creative stamping techniques regularly — from building stamped backgrounds by masking and layering, to creating custom titles with alphabet stamps. Check out the tutorials below for everything from first-time stamping to advanced masking techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between clear stamps and rubber stamps?

Clear stamps are made of photopolymer and mount on an acrylic block — you can see through them for precise placement. Rubber stamps are pre-mounted on wood blocks and tend to give crisper impressions. Hip Kit Club primarily uses clear stamps because they're easier to store and you can see exactly where you're stamping.

Do I need a heat gun for heat embossing?

Yes. A regular hair dryer doesn't get hot enough and blows the powder everywhere. Craft heat guns (about $15-25) reach the right temperature and have a focused airflow. It's a one-time purchase that lasts years.

How do I get crisp stamp impressions?

Press firmly and evenly without rocking the stamp. Use a stamp platform for perfectly consistent results. Re-ink between every impression, and clean your stamps with a damp cloth after use to prevent ink buildup.
